Nestled in the woods of Maine, this sun-filled home honors timeless farmhouse style while achieving modern energy efficiency on a budget.

This new home couldn’t happen quickly enough for this growing family. With three small children, these homeowners were ready to build a new home with room to grow and play that would put a modern twist on a typical, charming New England farmhouse.

Set on an idyllic lot surrounded by woods and a small pond, the main floor of this modern farmhouse-style residence spans east to west, maximizing solar exposure to the south. The bright and open floor plan provides clear site lines from the crisp, white kitchen through the living and dining rooms and ending at the screen porch that’s awaiting the arrival of warmer days.

Locally sourced materials were a must for this family. Local stone was used as countertop surfaces, and repeated in the cozy fireplace surround. Red birch flooring offers warm wood tones throughout the home, and cork flooring was used in the playroom to provide a softer surface to play on while also minimizing sound to keep the rest of the home calm.

It was very important to the parents that their home be a cozy, sun-filled residence using high-performance windows and doors that fit their tight budget. To take full advantage of the southern exposure, the home’s site-specific design solution situated the home to capture an abundance of sunlight and views to a nearby pond. The overhang on the second level provides protective shading of the lower level windows while allowing plenty of solar gain in the snowy winter months.

Key to the success of the project was the selection of high-performance Integrity Wood-Ultrex Casement & Awning and Double Hung Windows and Wood-Ultrex Inswing French Doors.
